<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correct the inclination of a manuscript with high accuracy, irrespective of the manuscript class. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A manuscript upper end detecting portion 13 detects a line image which shows the end portion of an upstream side, in the sub-scanning direction of the manuscript from pre-scan image data having a higher resolution than main scan image data; the coordinates of both end portions in the extending direction of this line image are detected as both-end coordinates of the manuscript upper end edge; the inclination angle of the manuscript at scanning is calculated, based on both-end coordinates. And, a manuscript inclination correcting portion 15 corrects the inclination of the manuscript during scanning in the main scanning image data, based on both-end coordinates and the inclination angle.
