PURPOSE: A hair growth promoting agent containing, as an effective component, an Astragali Radix extract exhibiting excellent hair growth promoting action as compared to minoxidil is provided. It can be used as a hair growth promoting agent without causing adverse side effects to the human body. CONSTITUTION: The hair growth promoting agent contains an Astragali Radix extract and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. It additionally contains an herbal extract selected from Thuja orientalis, Morus alba, Sophorae Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Caryophylli Flos, Flos Carthami, Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, Theae folium and dried eggplants. The hair growth promoting agent is formulated into shampoos, soaps, creams or the like and its dosage is about 2 and 20mg (preferably 6 to 10mg) per kg body weight per day.
