The data carrier is in form of a chip card (1) comprising a power source (5) and an electronic circuit (2). A transmission unit is contactlessly connected with the electronic circuit. An electric signal generated by the circuit is provided to an output (6) and hence to the transmission unit. A clock generator (8) controls switching between different levels of the output (6) signal. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating the data carrier.
