<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and efficiently input a special character, symbol or the like peculiar to a certain language without requiring a change of the configuration of a keyboard, in a character input device having a key input part and a handwriting input part for inputting characters. <P>SOLUTION: When inputting a retrieval character string (a keyword/Pinyin) by the key input part and the handwriting input part 16, spelling character input is performed by recognition character input accompanying handwriting input operation or direct character input by key input operation when performing the spelling character input, and Pinyin character input is performed by touch operation to a four-tune input screen 16S set and displayed on the handwriting input part 16 and alphabet input by the key input operation when performing the Pinyin character input.
