The present invention provides a process and an apparatus for concentrating a dilute solution. The apparatus comprises a vertical freeze concentration column and refrigerating unit to generate freezing near the lower end of the column. The apparatus also comprises means for generating micro-size particles in the area of freezing as well as a receiver coupled to an outlet in the freeze concentration column for collecting the micro-size ice particles near the upper end of the column. The apparatus also comprises another receiver coupled to an outlet in the column for collecting concentrated solution near the lower end of the column.
