<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the friction resistance of a sliding surface of a metal work. <P>SOLUTION: A device for treating a sliding metal surface comprises a laser beam generation unit 10 to output femtosecond laser beams to be irradiated on a sliding surface sf of a metal work W and a stage 50 which is disposed on the optical axis of the laser beam generation unit 10 to mount the metal work W thereon. A fine periodic structure is formed by irradiating femtosecond laser beams on the sliding surface sf of the metal work W on the stage 50, and the friction resistance of the sliding surface sf is reduced thereby.
