The present invention is related to the use of neuronal channel-forming pannexins for the manufacture of drugs for preventing and/or treating neurological disorders involving hippocampal pyramidal cells in mammals. <??>Moreover, the invention concerns the use of pannexins for in vitro diagnosing such neurological disorders. <??>The present invention is also directed to methods for selecting, in vitro or in vivo using an animal model, compounds useful for preventing and/or treating, in mammals, neurological disorders involving the hippocampal pyramidal cells, by modifying the channel-forming ability of pannexins.
