Feeding device for rod and bar type workpieces (2) has a measurement arrangement (33) for measuring the position of an end and or the length of a bar held in a waiting position. A work piece retainer (11) moves with a workpiece as it is fed. The work piece retainer and the measurement arrangement are moved in common with the workpiece. An independent claim is made for a machine arrangement for machining or processing of rod or bar type workpieces, especially pipes.
