PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanner capable of scanning at higher speed, and to provide a method of operating the same. SOLUTION: A flat bed scanner (10) includes a housing (12), a transparent platen (16) which is positioned on the housing for receiving a scanning object and a carriage (18) which can move in the horizontal direction and the vertical direction. The carriage has a light source (26) for illuminating the object and a square photodetector array (24) for detecting the strength of light of a plurality of scanning lines simultaneously.
