Systems and methods for determining hearing thresholds of people are described, the methods including the steps of: presenting an auditory stimulus of a duration of less than one second to the person; wherein the power of the stimulus is spread across a frequency range in alternating regions of high and low intensity; and wherein the stimulus includes at least two regions of high intensity; and measuring the transient evoked electrical response of the brain of the person.
