PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce an efficiently producible polybutadiene capable of manifesting a low molecular weight and a narrow distribution of the molecular weight and useful as a modifier, etc., for rubbers by limiting the contents of a cis-1,4-configurational unit and a 1,2-configurational unit and the intrinsic viscosity within specified ranges. SOLUTION: This polybutadiene has an intrinsic viscosity [η] of 0.01-0.5 measured at 30 deg.C in toluene and is obtained by respectively regulating the contents of the cis-1,4-configurational unit and the trans-1,4-configurational unit in butadiene monomer units to 25-70 mol.% and 25-70 mol.% and the content of the 1,2-configurational unit to <=8 mol.% and, as necessary, further regulating the distribution of molecular weight to <=2. The polybutadiene is obtained by polymerizing, e.g. (A) 1,3-butadiene in the presence of (B) a catalyst prepared from a complex represented by the formula: NiX1X2Ln [X1 and X2 are each H, a halogen or the like; L is a Lewis base; (n) is 0-2], an organoaluminum compound and water.
