A brake system (10) including a brake disc (28) having first and second disc faces (28A,28B) on respective first and second sides of the brake disc and being mounted rotatably fast with but longitudinally slidable on a rotatable shaft (14), the brake disc (28) being clampable between a first friction surface (22) of a fixed brake pad (20) positioned on the first side and a second friction surface (26) of a moveable brake pad (26) positioned on the second side, the system further including a disc positioner (32) operable to define a running clearance between the first disc face and the first friction surface (22), the disc positioner being (32) adjustable to maintain the running clearance as the first brake pad (20) wears, and biasing means (36) located on the second side of the disc brake which biasing means (36) maintains contact between the disc positioner (32) and first face of the disc. <IMAGE>
