When a bird's-eye view map showing roads, the roads are emphatically displayed. A map display system (10) comprises a database (26) storing map data and display means (36) for displaying an image of a planar map or a bird's-eye view according to the map data acquired from the database storing map image. The map display system (10) further comprises image data creating means (38) for creating image data on a planar map or image data on a bird's-eye view map created by projection transformation of a planar map with a predetermined display width coefficient, drawing means (37) for drawing a map on basis of the image data on the planar map or the bird's-eye view map, and display width coefficient control means (39). When the image data on the bird's-eye view map is created, the display width coefficient control means (39) controls image data creating means (38) so that the roads shown on the planar map undergo projection transformation with a display width coefficient larger than the predetermined display width coefficient, and the display means (36) displays the map of the image data drawn by the drawing means (37).
