The detector has a transmitting and receiving section (101) for transmitting data from a safety control in a safety device over a communication line, where the data is added with the time measured in the control. Another safety control receives the data, and a communication abnormality detecting section (102) detects an abnormality in the line between the controls depending on the received data. A time delay detecting section (103) detects a time delay between the controls by comparing the time with another time that is measured in the latter control at the time of receiving the data. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting a time delay between devices that are connected with each other by a communication line.
