a matrix, and a plurality of coated fibers suspended in the matrix, the coated fibers each including a fiber and a multilayer interface coating deposited on the fiber, wherein the multilayer interface coating includes an oxide layer, a silicon containing compound layer, and a silicate formed at the interface of the oxide layer and the silicon containing layer.
