The process involves printing off a first area of the printing foil web during a first imprinting interval at a first imprinting station and then printing off a second area following on from the first at a second imprinting station. The foil web is accelerated between the first and second imprinting intervals so that an interspace (18, 19) between successive areas (10, 11, 12) of the web is greater than a non-imprinted area between associated successive imprinting stations of the material layer.
