The fuel is stored in liquid form in a first tank (2). Gas produced by the residual heat in the interior of the tank is not released to atmosphere when the tank pressure rises but is drawn off to a second tank (3) when the pressure in the first tank reaches a set maximum level. At this level a compressor (17) is initiated to deliver the fuel vapor at high pressure to the second tank from which the fuel is drawn off on demand through a pressure reducing valve (24).
