PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a membrane separator with stacked hollow fiber membrane units in which suspended solids are less liable to stick to the hollow fiber membrane units even in the case of raw water having a high concentration of suspended solids. SOLUTION: A large number of hollow fiber membranes 2 are parallel aligned and flatly arranged. Both edges of the membranes 2 in the longitudinal direction are bound with synthetic resin potting materials 3, 4. A plurality of hollow fiber membrane units 1 obtained by arranging the hollow fiber membranes in a reed screen shape are stacked in such a way that a gap is interposed between the units 1. Raw water is introduced into the gap between the stacked faces (reed screen faces) of the units 1 in the resulting membrane separator in a direction parallel to the faces from a part of a lateral face (in a direction parallel to the extending direction of the hollow fiber membranes). Permeate in the membranes 2 flows in the membranes 2, enters permeate drawing chambers and is drawn from the membrane separator through permeate drawing ports 10, 11.
