The vehicle stopping apparatus comprises a capture loop 30 which is large enough to loop over a vehicle tire, an attachment system provided over a portion of the capture loop to attached that portion of the loop to a vehicle tire 22 and a tether 16 coupled to the capture loop. The capture loop is preferably formed from a material comprising para-aramid fibres such as Kevlar (RTM) or Technora (RTM). The attachment system comprises at least one protrusion, preferably a number of barbed spikes 33a,33b, designed to penetrate a tire. The tether, also preferably constructed from para-aramid fibres, comprises a shock cord portion of a resilient material with an anchoring device 14 also preferably being coupled to the tether. The apparatus may include a deployment mechanism comprising a bay adapted to support the capture loop in a folded position, an ejector pin firing device and an ejector pin which is attached to the loop and which is designed to be fired so as to move the capture loop to an extended position. The deployment mechanism may include a sensor to control the ejector pin firing device. The deployment system may be mounted on a self-powered mobile delivery device designed to be able to pass beneath a target vehicle and the mobile delivery device may itself be launched from a launch platform designed to be mounted on a dispatching vehicle. Also claimed is a method of stopping a target vehicle. |
