<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily and accurately detect the strength of the ridge of an image, consequently performing image processing corresponding to the characteristics of the image. <P>SOLUTION: Slope calculation parts 211-1 to 211-3 calculate a slope value as the difference of pixel values between adjacent pixels. Absolute value calculation parts 212-1 to 212-3 calculate the absolute value of each slope value, and an addition calculation part 213 calculates the total of the absolute values of the slope values. Also, an addition calculating part 214 calculates the total of the inclination values, and an absolute value calculation part 215 calculates the absolute value of the total of the slope values. A difference calculation part 216 calculates a difference between the total of the absolute values of the slope values and the absolute value of the total of the slope values as ridge strength. A normalization calculation part 202 outputs the ridge strength signal indicating a ridge weight value by specifying the ridge strength.
