PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing apparatus capable of enhancing focal position detecting accuracy over a wide distance range including a close distance which is troublesome in a conventional manner. SOLUTION: A plurality of LEDs 1 to 7 are disposed in an auxiliary light emitting part. During the search of the focal position, the farther an object exists, the more the LEDs 1 to 7 are made to emit the light so as to irradiate the object with the AF auxiliary light. The number of the LEDs emitting the light is reduced as the focal position search comes closer to the close distance side, and then, light receiving elements are prevented from saturating when many light receiving elements located at the center and vicinity of the imaging device receive the reflected light.
