PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focus controller achieving a stable autofocus control by suppressing an influence of an object different from a principal object on a focus signal. SOLUTION: The automatic focus controller which performs focus control based on the focus signal corresponding to contrast of an image extracted from among output signals of an image pickup means comprises: a setting means S402 for setting an autofocus region in a screen of the image pickup means; extraction means S403, S404 for extracting focus signals of a plurality of extraction characteristics from among the output signals of the image pickup means corresponding to the autofocus region; and a selection means S404 for selecting the focus signal of an extraction characteristic in accordance with the set state of the autofocus region.
