Provided is a method for diagnosing degradation of a metal oxide varistor (MOV) used in a surge protection element, etc. The present invention provides a method for diagnosing degradation of an MOV comprising the steps of: providing an estimation equation database for a relation between a voltage and a resistive leakage current of an MOV; detecting an operation voltage and a first resistive leakage current of the MOV; calculating a second resistive leakage current corresponding to the operation voltage from the estimation equation database; and determining degradation of the MOV by comparing the first and second resistive leakage currents with each other. According to the present invention, degradation of the MOV in a surge protection element can be accurately diagnosed according to a reliable and objective criterion.
