PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fly measuring apparatus for rapidly and accurately measuring the amount of flies occurring in a production process of tobacco filter tow. SOLUTION: This fly measuring apparatus for measuring flies occurring in a production process of tobacco filter tow in real time comprises (a) a contact bar 11 which is arranged in contact with a moving tow band so as to scatter short fibers of filter tow attached to the tow band, (b) a cyclone 13 which sucks flies composed of scattered short fibers, concentrates the flies and discharges the concentrated flies from an outlet route, (c) a straightening part 15 which comprises a barrier wall installed inside the outlet route so as to break the rotation of passing air flow, (d) a detection part 16 which comprises an optical sensor adjoined to the straightening part 15 and laid at the downstream so as to detect the number of passing flies and (e) a calculating means 18 which computes the number of passing flies based on the electric signal from the detection part 16.
