Colorant for keratin fibers, especially human hair, contains optionally substituted nitrosopyridine(s) and -pyrimidine(s) (I) as coloring component. Colorant for keratin fibers, especially human hair, contains optionally substituted nitrosopyridine(s) and -pyrimidine(s) of formula (I) as coloring component. Q = nitrogen (N) or CR<4>; R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4> = hydrogen (H), halogen, 1-4 carbon (C) (hydroxy)alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, hydroxyl (OH), mercapto (SH), sulfo, carboxy or amino, optionally substituted by 1-4C (hydroxy)alkyl or 1-4C acyl, or in pairs form a condensed (hetero)aromatic ring. An Independent claim is also included for a method of coloring keratin fibers, especially human hair, by treatment, usually for about 30 minutes, with a colorant containing: (A) compound(s) (I); and (B) compound(s) with primary or secondary amino groups or OH groups, selected from primary or secondary amines, N-heterocyclic compounds, aromatic OH compounds, amino-acids, oligopeptides of 2-9 amino-acids and CH-active compounds, and usual cosmetic ingredients, then rinsing or washing with shampoo.
