PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element with superb emission characteristics obtained. SOLUTION: Each barrier rib is of a double-stage structure consisting of a lower-layer part and an upper-layer part. The lower-layer part has a film thickness of 50 nm or more, yet thinner than that of an organic compound layer, with an angle made by a slanted face of the lower layer and a flat face of a lower electrode of 35°or less. A film thickness of the upper-layer part is greater than that of the organic compound layer, a film thickness of the barrier rib totaling the lower-layer part and the upper-layer part is 700 nm or less, and it is so structured that an angle made by a line connecting an upper end of the upper-layer part and an upper end of the lower-layer part and a flat face of the lower electrode is to be 85°to 100°.
