<p>The invention concerns a lightweight idler roller which includes a central shaft (12) in the form of a hollow, swaged tube with bearing support zones (14.3) having bearing support surfaces formed by centreless grinding towards either end. A hollow, cylindrical roll (18) is located around the shaft (12) and bearings, (17) are mounted on the bearing support zones (14.3) to support the roll (18) in rotatable manner relative to the shaft (12). Bearing housings (20) are carried by the roll (18) and house the bearings (17). Bearing seals (26) are located on the ends of the shaft (12) outboard of the bearings (17) and end plugs (16) are press-fitted into the ends of the tube to hold the bearing seals (26) axially in position. These end plugs (16) have projecting end (16.2) portions which are shaped for non-rotatable engagement by shaft support structures at either end of the shaft (12).</p> |
