PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reasonably attain an initial sequence in an OCB liquid crystal device using a driving system similar to that upon image display without using a special high voltage circuit, and strike a balance between the enhancement of image quality and prevention of reverse transition of an OCB liquid crystal and the satisfactory and stable initial sequence. SOLUTION: The initial sequence includes a bend transition nucleus forming sequence and a bend transition nucleus expanding sequence. In the bend transition nucleus forming sequence, a lateral electric field is generated by a potential difference between a pixel electrode 9 and a non-selected scanning line X, and in the bend transition expanding sequence, a longitudinal electric field is generated by a potential difference between the pixel electrode 9 and a counter electrode 11. Sequential driving is adopted as the driving system. In an image display sequence, an original image display and black insertion are performed in one vertical synchronization period. A horizontal synchronization frequency in the initial sequence is specified to be 1/(2+α)(αis a real number of 0 or more) times as high as a horizontal synchronization frequency in the image display sequence.
