PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a projection display device which is made small in size and inexpensive in cost, and also achieves improvement of efficiency of using light from a light source. SOLUTION: The projection display device includes: a red LED light source R, a green LED light source G and a blue LED light source B; a cross dichroic mirror 13 synthesizing red light, green light and blue light and emitting the light as synthetic light; a polarizing beam splitter 2 transmitting the synthetic light to make polarization uniform; a liquid crystal display panel 4 modulating the light from the polarizing beam splitter 2; a projection optical system 16 projecting the light from the liquid crystal display panel 4; and an illumination optical system 14 condensing each light as illuminating light through the cross dichroic mirror 13 and the polarizing beam splitter 2 as illuminating light and illuminating the liquid crystal display panel 4. The shape of a light emitting surface of each light source is made similar figure of the shape of a light entering area of the polarizing beam splitter 2, and an imaging position 14a with the illuminating light by the illumination optical system 14 is set on the liquid crystal display panel 4 or in the vicinity thereof.
