PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily select a desired character from a plurality of characters.SOLUTION: A portable telephone comprises: position detection means that detects a position specified by a user in an area including a plurality of keys having characters associated with the respective keys; character selection means that selects a character corresponding to one key of the plurality of keys in accordance with the position detected by the position detection means; display means that displays the selected character and relevant characters classified into the same group as the selected character and different in a character type such that the relevant characters are located around the selected character; and relevant character selection means that is capable of selecting the relevant characters on the basis of a movement direction of the position specified by the user.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
