A method for reducing residual ethyl acrylate, acrylonitrile, or the combination thereof, comprising contacting an ethyl acrylate/acrylonitrile scavenging compound selected from the group consisting of bisulfite salts, sulfite salts, mercaptan carboxylic acids or salts thereof, high boiling point water soluble alkamines, amino acids, and a combination thereof with a stable aqueous dispersion of a polymer to form a polymeric dispersion that contains less than 1 ppm of ethyl acrylate and less than 1 ppm acrylonitrile; wherein the polymer contains a) polymerized units of acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate, or the combination thereof, and b) at least 5 ppm of ethyl acrylate monomer, acrylonitrile monomer, or the combination thereof; and wherein the ethyl acrylate/acrylonitrile scavenging compound are contacted with the aqueous dispersion of the polymer independently from contact of the aqueous dispersion of the polymer with any redox pairs; wherein the aqueous dispersion of the polymer comprises 0.01 wt % to 5 wt % of ethyl acrylate/acrylonitrile scavenging compound, based on the dry weight of the aqueous dispersion of the polymer.
