A "hot start" method for arc welding includes selecting a first weld current, setting a time interval, striking an arc, flowing a second, higher current through a welding rod (53) and then, after a brief interval, reducing the current through the rod (53) to the value of the first weld current. An arc welder stator (91) has two groups of slots around a core. Larger slots (1, 3, 5, ..., 31) contain weld current windings and smaller slots (2, 4, 6, ..., 32) contain windings (109, E, 117, 107), for timing, gate voltage, battery charging, and auxiliary power. Cooling apparatus (139) includes an air duct (141) and fan body (145) with two sets of blades (143, 147) for flowing air along several paths (55, 67) cooling both the control section (61) and generator (79). The engine speed in the welder (40) is controlled by manipulating a current-selecting device (57), contacting work piece plates (41) with the welding rod (53), accelerating the engine (81) to an elevated speed and maintaining or reducing such speed depending upon the value of current selected.
