<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To incorporate an optical functional element in an optical communication line at site simply and inexpensively. <P>SOLUTION: A mechanical splice 10 consisting of a base 2 with aligning grooves 2a, 2b, lid bodies 5a, 5b stacked on this base 2, and a plate spring 6 for elastically holding the both in-between, is used. The optical components 1 for an optical communication line are so configured that optical functional element 3 with optical fibers 4a, 4b extended on both sides in the middle part in the longitudinal direction on the upper face of the base 2 is located, and the optical fibers 4a, 4b are held in the aligning grooves 2a, 2b. When the optical functional element 3 is incorporated in the optical communication line, optical fibers 12a, 12b on the line side are inserted into the aligning grooves 2a, 2b by spreading the lid bodies 5a, 5b by a wedge member, and are butt-spliced to the built-in optical fibers 4a, 4b.
