<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical substrate having a modulated structure on a surface; which can serve as an optical modulation substrate for the backlight of a flat panel display such as the backlight of a liquid crystal display (LCD). <P>SOLUTION: There is provided an optical substrate. The optical substrate includes one or more surfaces. The one or more surfaces include one or more optical structures having a shape and dimensions, wherein the shape and the dimensions represents in part a modulation of a corresponding idealized structure. The shape and the dimensions of each of the one or more optical structures are determined in part by one or more randomly generated components of modulation, wherein the modulation of each of the one or more optical structures is limited by a neighboring optical structure comprised by the surface. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
