PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save the labor for manually removing residual paper when a power supply is cut off while a sheet handling device is operating and paper remains in the sheet handling device. SOLUTION: This sheet handling device has a nonvolatile memory for storing the state of the sensor for detecting the feed and clogging of paper in the sheet handling device. The sheet handling device comprises a control means which determines whether the state of the sheet handling device when the power supply is cut off is normal or paper remains or paper is clogged by using sensor state data stored in the nonvolatile memory when the power supply is turned on. When the paper remains, it performs a paper discharge treatment. When paper is clogged, it displays error messages. When the power supply is cut off while the paper handling device is operating, the residual paper in the sheet handling device is automatically discharged when current next flows therein.
