PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biomass grinding apparatus for highly efficiently grinding biomass using a conventional vertical grinder and its control method. SOLUTION: The biomass grinding apparatus is provided with a grinding table 52 on which biomass supplied to a biomass grinder 14 is placed; a motor 54 rotationally driving the table 52; grinding rollers 58 in conjunction with the rotation of the table 52, applying pressing pressure to biomass for grinding it; an exhaust gas circulation fan 24 blowing off air upwardly from the lower periphery of the table 52; a roller lift sensor 64 detecting a distance between the rollers 58 and table 52; and a roller lifting amount controlling means 66 controlling the pressing pressure of the rollers, a rotary speed of the exhaust gas circulation fan 24 or the motor 54 to keep the distance between the rollers 58 and table 52 within a certain range for promoting mutual grinding of chips of the supplied biomass, based on the signals from the sensor 64.
