The method involves examining whether a vehicle-sensitive blocking system (28) reaches into a blocking condition, in which a belt coil (14) is blocked in a seat belt strap winding up direction when a safety belt (16) is tightened. The blocking system is sampled whether the system reaches into the blocking condition when the electric motor is subsequently controlled in the seat belt strap winding up direction. An electric motor is directly controlled in the seat belt strap winding up direction. An independent claim is also included for a belt retractor with a belt coil and a vehicle-sensitive blocking system.
