Production of a magnesium hot strip comprises continuously casting a magnesium alloy melt to a pre-strip having a thickness of not more than 50 mm; and hot rolling the pre-strip directly from the casting heat at a roller starting temperature of at 250-500 deg C to form a hot strip having a final thickness of not more than 4 mm, in which in a first pass of the hot rolling process, a reduction on thickness of at least 15% is achieved. Preferred Features: Casting of the melt takes place in a protective gas. The pre-strip is brought to the hot rolling starting temperature before hot rolling with temperature compensation.
