<p>There is provided a method for discarding a packet from a shared memory packet processor. The method comprises steps of a) providing a shared memory packet processor, the packet processor having a plurality of output ports, each output port supporting a plurality of output queues, each output queue being mapped to a packet loss priority, b) determining which of the output ports are congested, c) determining which of the congested output ports contain, in their output queues, at least one packet of the highest loss priority available, d) selecting an output port from those congested output ports determined at step c), e) selecting an output queue in the selected congested output port, the selected output queue mapping to the highest packet loss priority available, and f) discarding a packet from the selected output queue. There is also provided a shared memory packet processor and a method for handling packets incoming to and packets outgoing from a shared memory packet processor.</p> |
