A chip type electric double layer capacitor comprising a upper and lower metal cases (12, 18) respectively connected with terminals with mutually different poles and kept non-contact with each other, two polarizing electrodes (24a, 24b) closely fitted or joined to the inner-side surfaces of the upper and lower cases (12, 18) impregnated or coated with electrolyte on the outer surfaces thereof, a shorting preventing separator (26) disposed between the two electrodes (24a, 24b), and a non-conductive enclosing means (28) joined at the upper surface (30) and the lower surface (32) thereof to the edges (13, 19) on the inner-side surfaces of the upper and lower metal cases (12, 18) respectively, with the two electrodes (24a, 24b) and the separator (26) housed between the upper and lower metal cases (12, 18). Preferably, the enclosing means (28) is non-conductive solid polymer. In addition, the upper and lower surfaces of the enclosing means (28) are joined to the edges on the inner surfaces of the upper and lower metal cases (12, 18) by a thermocompression bonding method. |
