PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a negative electrode material for a nonaqueous electrolyte battery capable of realizing the nonaqueous electrolyte battery enhancing discharge capacity and charge discharge cycle life. SOLUTION: The negative electrode material for the nonaqueous electrolyte battery has an intermetallic compound having a composition represented by general formula (1) and containing the three kinds of elements of A, Sn, and M as an essential ingredient as the main phase. A<SB>a</SB>Sn<SB>b</SB>M<SB>c</SB>T<SB>e</SB>X<SB>f</SB>Z<SB>g</SB>(1). Wherein, preferably, A represents at least one kind of element selected from Ca, Sr, and Ba, M represents at least one element selected from Co, Ni and the like, T represents at least one kinhd of element selected from Zr, Hf and the like, X represents at least one kind of element selected from Si, and Al and the like, and Z represents at least one kind of element selected from C, N and the like.
