CLEANING HEAD ASSEMBLY

A cleaning head assembly for a surface cleaning apparatus has a body (3) having a forward end (4), a rearward end (5) and a longitudinal axis (11) extending along the body (3) from the forward end (4) to the rearward end (5). A downwardly-directed elongate suction opening (20) is provided adjacent the forward end (4) of the body (3) and extends transversely to the longitudinal axis (11) of the body (3). There is an airflow outlet (37) provided adjacent the rearward end (5) of the body (3) that is connectable with a surface cleaning apparatus. A suction passage (38) is provided for conducting air from the suction opening (20) to the airflow outlet (37). A drivable agitator (30) is provided adjacent the forward end (4) of the body (3) and at least partially projects through the suction opening (20). A turbine (44) has a rotation axis and is responsive to air flow in the suction passage (38) from the suction opening (20) to the airflow outlet (37) for driving the agitator (30). A first portion (39) of the suction passage (38) is provided adjacent the airflow outlet (37) that is aligned along the longitudinal axis (11) of the body (3). The turbine (44) is located in the first portion (39) of the suction passage (38) that is adjacent the airflow outlet (37). The rotation axis of the turbine (44) is aligned along the longitudinal axis (11) of the body (3).
