PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform a maintenance operation of a head during printing. SOLUTION: This image forming apparatus is equipped with a line head where ejection ports for ejecting a droplet to a recording medium are arranged over a length corresponding to the overall width of the recording medium, a head recovery means for performing head recovery processing for recovering a malfunction in the ejection port of the line head, a head retreating means for moving the line head to a retreat position to perform the head recovery processing, and an auxiliary head movable in a direction almost perpendicular to the carrying direction of the recording medium.
