A DMB receiver for upgrading firmware by an external storing apparatus and a method thereof are provided to upgrade the firmware stably by upgrading the firmware again when error occurs during the upgrade of the firmware. A digital multimedia broadcasting receiver comprises an input unit(208), an antenna(202), an RF control unit(204), a signal processing unit(206) and a display unit(210). An interface unit(220) is connected to an external storage apparatus(230) in which firmware for upgrade is stored. A memory unit(212) stores setup information including channel information about a digital multimedia broadcast, a boot loader, firmware for driving a DMB receiver and a firmware upgrade program. A main control unit(214) recognizes the firmware for upgrade stored in the external storage apparatus connected through the interface unit. The current firmware is upgraded by executing the firmware upgrade program stored in the memory unit. The firmware for upgrade includes a CRC(Cyclic Redundancy Check) value for cyclic redundancy check. The main control unit tests reliability of firmware data for upgrade by using the CRC value. |
