PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor light-emitting device including the improved light extraction structure.SOLUTION: The semiconductor light-emitting device includes a host substrate 36, a substrate including a seed layer 24 bonded to the host substrate, and a III-nitride device layer 18 grown on the seed layer. A plane layer 60 is grown on the seed layer and a patterned material 54 under the condition suitable for the vertical growth rather than the horizontal growth, and a column of a semiconductor material partitioned by holes 58 is formed on the patterned material. The difference in refractive index between the hole and the plane layer and between the patterned material and the plane layer forms the light extraction structure.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 16
