The detector has scintillator (30) transmitting photoelectrons during incidence of X-ray photons, and electron multiplier (44) receiving the photoelectrons. Charge collecting electrodes (72) receive the photoelectrons to produce electrical signals representing a quantity of photoelectrons hitting the electrodes. An image controlling and processing unit analyzes the signals to determine a position of incidence of X-ray photons. An independent claim is also included for a process of detecting X-rays.
