ON-BOARD DISTANCE MEASURING DEVICE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an on-board distance measuring device, capable of measuring the distance from its own vehicle up to an obstruction with satisfactory accuracy, even if the obstruction is comparatively far away. SOLUTION: The measuring device includes an image acquisition section for acquiring an image in front of own vehicle; a lane-width measuring section for detecting a lane where the vehicle runs; an object detecting element for detecting an obstruction in front of the vehicle; a lane width measuring section for measuring the lane width at a reference position and the lane width at a detected obstacle position; and a distance estimation section for comparing the lane width at the reference position and the lane width at the detected obstruction position, and estimating the distance from the vehicle up to the obstruction.
