PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which copes with a high speed reader while having a shading function for suppressing deterioration in SPM as much as possible, and also to provide image reading method and program, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: When shading correction operation is not carried out until n-th original after the originals are carried continuously and the shading correction operation is performed for the first original, gain of a gain amplifier is corrected from the characteristics of variation in quantity of light with time of an exposure lamp such that the variation in quantity of light of the exposure lamp is negated for the 2, 3, ..., (n-1)th originals. The read-out image quality is thereby made constant even in the shading performed intermittently, and cope with a high speed reader while suppressing deterioration in SPM as much as possible.
