A media image detecting apparatus and method and a media handling system using the same are provided, which improve the processing speed by reducing the computational complexity to process. A media image detecting apparatus comprises the contour detection part(15), the minimum area detection unit(16), the rotational direction determining unit(17), the vertex extracting unit(18), the slope output unit(19), and the image detection part(20). The contour detection part detects the contour line of the media image. The minimum area detection unit detects the image of the minimum area in which the media image is included by using the detected contour line. The rotational direction determining unit determines the rotational direction of the detected minimum area.
