A method for differentiating human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSC) into hair follicles and interfollicular epidermis comprising; a) generating hiPSCs from isolated dermal fibroblasts via transduction of OCT3/4, SOX2 and KLF4 encoding nucleic acids into said fibroblasts; b) contacting said hiPSCs with retinoic acid, thereby inducing formation of ectodermal like cells; c) contacting said ectodermal like cells with BMP4 and EGF; d) expanding the cells of step c) in a growth medium comprising EGF, thereby inducing differentiation of said ectodermal like cells; e) harvesting hEpSCs from the expanded cells of step d), said hEpSCs expressing CD200+, ITGA6+and KRT15 and being molecularly and functionally similar to human hair follicle derived hEPSCs.
